WOKC exists for reasons as simple as a few statistics:
• Each year in the U.S. approximately 12,500 children, about 1 in 330, are diagnosed with cancer. That equates to 46 children a day or 2 classrooms.
• Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in America, and the #2 after automobile accidents. More children will die from cancer than from AIDS, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and asthma combined.
• There are 5 children diagnosed with cancer for each 1 diagnosed with pediatric AIDS, yet only $20,000 is invested in cancer research for each $595,000 invested in pediatric AIDS research.
• A full two-thirds of the children cured of cancer in childhood end up with at least one long term health problem from the treatment. More than 1/3 of childhood cancer survivors can expect to have life-threatening illness or serious chronic disease by the age of 45.
